First Day On The Road

First Day On The Road Benson, AZ to Las Cruces, NM
June 9, 2011

Well our first day on the road came to an end on a high note.  We left Benson, Thursday, June 9th, at about .  We had an uneventful drive..it didn’t get interesting until we got to the camp ground Keith had mapped for us.  We made it right before sundown….as we drove into the campground there was a sign  that said the camp ground was open from to sunset.  We went in and chose a camp site and began unloading the tent from the roof rack of the truck. No problem…everything was going smooth, until, KABOOM! I fell! L  I hurt my left leg AND my back!  I am a trooper…so I got up, dusted myself off and continued helping set up the tent. By the time we finished setting up the tent, it was just after sunset.   That done we decided to go get something to either make for dinner or buy it. We’d seen a sign for RADIUM SPRINGS a town just a mile from our camp and decided to go there in search of food.

Well, we drove down a mile….and there was NOTHING to Radium Springs except a bar..! Disappointed, Keith makes a U-turn and we start heading back the way we came.  No sooner had we picked up speed,  when we see the flashing lights of a police cruiser behind us.  He SAID he was pulling us over because of ILLEGIBLE License plate!  Hog wash!!  When Keith asked him if he could step out to see the license plate, he said NO.   Anyway, it didn’t amount to anything.  He didn’t give Keith a ticket….as he started to walk away Keith asked him if there was a convenience store close by….the Officer chuckled and said that we would have to head out to the interstate and drive 9 miles in.  So we got back on the interstate and drove 9 miles in….to a CIRCLE K!!  LOL…where I bought, a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs, butter and ham.  That done, we drove back to our camp….as we turn in, the ENTRANCE is shut and locked!!  Remember earlier when I said the posted sign said opened from to sunset?  Well, next time we will be paying better attention!! The only other way we could get in was through the side that was for campers to get out…..since it has those spikes that if you go in the wrong way it will bust the tires.  Okay…what to do??  We had my cell phone, and two phone numbers to the campground.  We go ahead and call….well, one of the numbers is, disconnected or is no longer in service if you feel you’ve reached this recording in error, please hang up and try your call again!! Ggggrrrrr…ok, try the next number.  Another recording that says they are closed!!  I am inside the truck dialing these numbers.  Meanwhile, Keith is out there checking out the spikes…just as I hang up from the second recording..he jumps back in the truck…puts the truck in drive and heads for the opening!! We make it across with no exploding tires!! Genius Keith struck again!! He jammed the spikes down with rocks and we got in!! LOL

This morning the camp host came by asking us when we got in, we told her we’d made it in just before sunset…which we did, no lying…we just didn’t volunteer the REST of the story…LOL!!  And it will be a mystery as to “Who done jammed the spikes”?  Of course, until the host stumbles across this blog..LOL!!

Next we are off from Las Cruces, NM to Junction, TX.

Stay with us for more of our adventure as we seek NEW HORIZONS!!

The spikes, you can still see the ones to the left are still down!
